The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

Eve Dennett gets a phone call from Mia Dennett’s coworker telling her that she has not shown up to work and deems it unusual to not have received a call. Mia is Eve’s daughter who is believed to have gone missing. Eve and her husband, James Dennett, talk to Detective Gabe Hoffman who is now leading the investigation to find out where Mia is. There is some tension between the three as the investigation commences with James’s lack of confidence in Gabe’s police work. They eventually trace Mia to her last known whereabouts and find out Mia had met a guy named Owen at a bar and went home with him. This was the last time anyone saw her.

I’m not sure how I feel about The Good Girl. You have this great idea but Mary Kubica fails to deliver. The characters and their relationships are the focus of this story but she fails to dive into it more. The ending left me utterly unsatisfied, as I had already predicted it.

You have to make sure you understand where you are in the book’s timeline: BEFORE or AFTER. This can get a little confusing when listening to the audiobook. I kept forgetting what the narrator said in the beginning of the chapter and then I would forget when this chapter takes place. You also get 4 different POVs: Eve Dennett, Gabe Hoffman, Colin Thatcher, and a surprise one in the epilogue.

I gotta say I’m disappointed. The premise was good. The multiple POV was interesting but the plot twist didn’t quite hit. I enjoyed the writing and the characters but needed more.

Review on Fable

Like I mentioned above this book has multiple POV’s that helps bring into perspective different sides to the story. We also get two timelines which lets the reader know earlier in the book Mia’s fate. While the premise was pretty entertaining and I enjoyed the story itself, the ending failed to deliver what I was craving; an unexpected plot twist. Instead Mary Kubica rushes the story that leaves readers guessing.
